It’s difficult to know where to start with is kite, it’s so much fun! You’d be forgiven for thinking that a kite with such drastic venting would require a gale to fly, but the RX Spider only requires a light breeze. The kite is so light, that a strong pull of the handles sends it rocketing into the air, you barely need to cover any ground to keep it airborne.
The Reflex springs are an ingenious idea. When the sail loses pressure from the wind, the springs push against the vertical surfaces, creating an airfoil. This causes the kite to glide into the wind window like a paper plane, with lines completely slack, the kite has an uncanny ability to enter an “auto-pilot” mode and find where it needs to be. A wonderful side-effect of this feature is that it widens the wind window. At the side-most and top-most regions of the window, where the original Revolution would stall and fall on its face, the Reflex floats. You can effortlessly pull the kite beyond 90 degrees overhead, and instead of stalling and falling on your head, it glides back into the window.
The reverse flight performance of the RX Spider is incomparable with the original Revolution design. The vented wings have far less of a tendency to flip forward during reverse flight, this drastically reduces the amount of correction you need to do to maintain a straight path. I’ve found that if you ease the Spider into a reverse motion, and get a little momentum going, you can accelerate along that path with minimal correction.
